Videocast made by myself, Erwan, Sylvain & Hélène

Check out this wonderful video...

Some useful links

This picture, illustrating the fact that I think that our presence on the web is like a castle in war - we must defend our point of view and our visibility, was made by me. So, here are some useful links for my presentation :

- Things that I did during Bob's class :

Of course , here is my Blog, but you can also see...
The wiki made during bob's class.
The myspace from my band.

- Links to Weblog made by artists :

(Sorry but those two drawers are french - I love what they do)
Toaster Factory (I worked with this brand of street wear)

What I am

It seems very important now to deeply introduce myself and my work made durint this year of e-culture.

First of all, you must know that I'm a drawer and a musician. For me, Internet offers great opportunities to publishing my works.

For instance, with some other guys from our class (AKA Jean-François, Guillaume & Jeremy from the master1) we manage to build up a band. You can hear few samples of our songs & some videos here. Indeed, myspace permits to easily communicate on our band, and to build up a web of friends or bands that we like.

On an other hand, as I said before, I am a drawer : you have already seen some artworks that I did for the band. Internet permits to artist like me to broadcast their art without spending any money!

As an example I can give you for free this comic - made just for you Bob :

However, it is not so easy to put some good photos or pictures (like this one) on a blog. You must try to host it. For example, I use imageshack.us/

Some advices to make more progress and make it more interesting

Hey Bob, please do not take it in a bad way (And please, Bob, do not kill me for my frankness) but the truth is that answer to questions three hours a day is very boring, even if the questions are wonderful. I must say that it would be much more better if you would make confidence to all of us (we are not children!! We are big kids now!) and you would give us some opportunities to build up some more attractive things together. For instance, we can realize a video podcast, a common weblog, or some other common works. I think the better way to improve this course is to relax yourself and be confident: do not be silly when there is some noise or movement, it can be useful or actually creative!! The fact is that improving our English or our e-culture is easier and much more interesting when we do it ourselves!!!

A few about RSS… & about SHTTP

RSS is a flux to automatically actualize the information from the site (or the part of the site) that you chose. It is a kind of “on-demand” medium. Watch out this definition from wikipedia.org

An RSS flux is available on my blog (but it is not that easy to make it work)

About SHTTP : I must confess that I did not know anything about this technology. The most synthetic and interesting point of view was the one from wikipedia ( a goldenmine of information ;-)). So here is their definition :

"SHTTP means Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol which is developed by Enterprise Integration Technologies in 1995 to ensure security with commercial transactions on the Internet. A protocol that provides secure transactions over the Web. It is endorsed by a variety of organizations.

An extension to the HTTP protocol to support sending data securely over the World Wide Web. Not all Web browsers and servers support S-HTTP. Another technology for transmitting secure communications over the World Wide Web -- Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) -- is more prevalent. However, SSL and S-HTTP have very different designs and goals so it is possible to use the two protocols together. Whereas SSL is designed to establish a secure connection between two computers, S-HTTP is designed to send individual messages securely. Both protocols have been submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for approval as a standard."

Cybercrime: the identities burglars…

" Ho my god!...What is the deal with my bank???!!!!"

For a good definition of cybercrime and identity thefts, see here;

Well what is the point with cybercrime : it is almost a way to stole money to people, with an appropriation of bank ID. But it is also a way to take the identity of an other person (on MSN for example) to steal personal information or to enjoy the perversity of being someone else. Everybody is potential victim.

How can you stop the fraud?

As soon as you are made aware of the fraud (usually a creditor will contact you or you will be denied credit, or you will see charges that are not yours on bills) you must immediately contact the three major credit reporting agencies by phone and letter to put a fraud alert on your credit profile. Get copies of the reports so that you will know which are the fraud accounts, and call the police in the county where the fraud occurs. You may not be able to stop the fraud immediately. It is very complex. But this will get you started. You will get step by step instructions when you order the coaching guide, The Identity Theft Survival Kit to find out what you need to do. You'll obtain copies of attorney-written sample letters to write to all the necessary agencies. The computer diskette has fill-in the blanks form letters to save you hours of retyping. Once you have learned all the facts of your case, write a 100-word statement explaining the situation and have that paragraph added to your credit profile.

Here are some other example of ways to protect yourself against cybercrime.

Broadcast yourself with YouTube : A “Do It Yourself” project

YouTube is a new easy way of broadcasting videos on the Internet. The deal is you can share funny, curious or amazing videos with your friends and everybody in the world. The really new thing is that it is truly easy; everybody can do it, not only nerds!!! That is, from my point of view, the key of its success.

There is a legend about the starting of YouTube : the conceptors of this website were trying to find out a way to broadcast short videos of a party that they did the evening before. At that point, they realized that it was very hard to put videos on the web, it was a geek deal! The fact is that a few month after that, their website exploded as the really brand new sensation on the Web. (What a story, indeed). Actually, the real official history is available here.

Often, YouTube is just a way to watch some old videos, or new funny stuffs to laugh about it. When I or some friends want to share some videos, it is almost to make a huge joke or to show bizarre or amazing events, like this :

But the question is : is it bankable? Well, I think that you can do marketing or advertising on this kind of Web platform. The other idea is to build up a real social network of future customers, behind a great idea, like a podcast or anything else like this. But I have no real idea about that. The only economical schema about it is : doing publicity around the video (like on the “happy tree friends videos”)

How to improve my English... On the web!!!

There are many ways to learn and improve english on the web: e-schools, e-learning, often expensive, like in our example. Those are the official way to improve any language. But we can use other way, like wathing downloaded movies in original version - not dubbed, of course ;-), and listen to american, canadian or english podcasts or radio shows -like, for instance, the BBC podcasts... However, my opinion is that the better way to improve our English is to really practice that with strangers. Internet provides us great opportunities to meet exchange students or aliens, and technologies like MSN or, more basically, e-mails, chats or forums permits to easily communicate with our friends. For example, as I go abroad (to Danemark) and my only true link with the met sutudent is the web. This is a pretty good way to improve my english.

Qualities for the Internet

Today our favourite e-culture professor wants us to focus on the six qualities of good professional activity. Of course, I am going to search the reflect of those ideas on the web... Here we go!!!

Generosity - the core of internet ideology : generosity is the master word on the web, from my opinion. Indeed, the ideology of internet is based on the dream of freedom and exchange. For instance, there is a big phenomenon of generosity around the forum of help, like on computer help forum. Digital problems are often huge, so this kind of help, is for me, really generous: free, helpful and coming from a real community (not based on advertising and marketing)

Discipline: chaos on the webI do not really think that discipline is a useful concept on the web. The profusion of ideas and concepts, the violence and the sex, and maybe illegal things (terrorism, traffics) meet each other on the web, and I can truly affirm that web is much more based on freedom than in discipline. Please remember that one of the first ideologies of web culture is the ideology of hackers, and of digital piratery. See the novels of William Gibbson – Neuromancer for example, based on this digital mayhem, or WarGame, the first movie about digital webs and based on the image of chaos associated to the Internet -directed by John Badham, with Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Wood

Two keys for sucess :

-Patience: Ho, Jesus, that is deeply true that we all need patience to find out interesting things on the web!!! As I said before, web is based on chaos. Therefore, find really useful information is a real challenge.

-Perseverance : same thing... Everybody need to find out time, patience and perseverance to manage his web travel. The fish wont come easily!!!!

And what about... Insight???

It is the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively. Hey, but the fact is we all need some insight to find out solutions on the web. Yeah, we all need to reflect on what we are searching for. For example, when I search informations on www.google.com, i need to take care on what i'm really searching.

Find things needs all those key words, yeah!!!
And how use comprehension??? One drawing is better than every words : here is the way to understand what is a cat.

You have got it? No, i am only joking!!! But the fact is that schema express the real way to comprehend stuffs on the web : it is a brain work. In fact, this last (but not least) key word is the addition of any of the four first concept. That is the way to understand if what you have found out is really interesting, like for instance on wikipedia.org

Innovations and future on the web

Before this message, I have already talked about podcasts, but this is not the single recent innovation on the internet. In fact, many things are done nowadays on the web : I'ma going to have a little speech about those brand new stuffs :

First of all, the true next innovation is the "web 2.0". The fact is the "old" internet was built all around texts. The center and the aim of the web was nothing but texts. The revolution of "web 2.O" is the apparition of a "semantic" web, much more based on image, action and interactivity, forgetting html to higlight new scrpits like javascript, xml or things like this.

This revolution is linked to an evolution of mentalities, with the rise of idelogies like "web neutrality" : this is the focus on ethic on Internet. This is a real return to the first ideology of "internet" : the ideology of community around the hackers , with all this ideas of freedom of expression. But his vision is being threatened by companies, and other Internet service providers, that want to impose a new system of fees that could create a hierarchy of Web sites. Major corporate sites would be able to pay the new fees, while little sites could be shut out.

In fact this return to the first idelogies of the web is broken by new rtechnologies broadcasted by huge companies, like for example DRM - for Digital Right Manager. It is a program who is added on CD/DVD and all music downloaded on web. If the concept is to protect the products of artists, it in fact blocks a lot of things on the web, based on free exchange.

But the evolution of the web is almost highlighted on the new "social networks", which include different type of networks. Meetic, Myspace... etc, give a real power to everybody to broadcast themselves. However, Google bought Youtube a few days ago, and that reveals the social networks are going to evolve economicaly.

Podcasting : the e-broadcasting

An example is the better way to explain something, "you know what i'm sayin'"... So, here is an extract from a video podcast with a talkative fat bad boy talking about very important things :

The name "podcast" seems to come from the contraction of the words "iPod" and "broadcast". Then we can say that it is a new way of broadcasting stuffs by your own handable digital device...

So, how does it work, what is new in podcasts? At least, podcasting works like a desktop aggregator. First of all, you must subscribe to a set of feeds, and then can easily view the new uploads from all of the feeds together, or each feed separately. Then, you have to listen to the new content on an iPod or iPod-like device, like any mp3 player...Think of your iPod as having a set of subscriptions that are checked regularly for updates, using an RSS flux. The interest is that you can listen to your favourite radio or video show whenever you want, and the upload is entierely automatic, so you do not have to search for.

Anyway, in the future, more and more radio shows will be available in this manner, and perhaps other syndication formats will support enclosures. As a conclusion, we can say that podcasts are a very interesting way of create personnal show and to broadcast it everywhere in the world. Huge media companies have cannibalized this way of expressing yourself but very own, personnal podcasts still exist and express a real freedom of expression, like in this last example (with guitars and teenage rebels with attitude -and at least, very professional with a great quality of images):

Bye bye
